Rauw Alejandro

In 2017 Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee released Despacito and it was the top-streamed track at the time within the space of six months. The single a mix of reggaeton and pop music has not just brought interest to reggaeton, but also brought attention towards Latin music more generally. In 2015, there were two mostly Spanish-language songs on Billboard's Top 100 and in 2016 there were four. In 2017, at the peak of the popularity of Despacito 19, 19 songs mostly in Spanish have made it into the Billboard Top 100. In 2020, the number will increase to 41 tracks within this genre. After Justin Bieber released his bilingual remix of Despacito in the year 2017 the most well-known artists began to join forces with reggaeton musicians. Drake and Bad Bunny worked together for the track MIA MIA (2018), while Madonna joined forces with Maluma for Medellin in the year 2019. In 2020, a few Reggaeton artists were complaining about the direction of their genre to the mainstream. But a newer generation such as Rauw Alejandro was determined to maintain the development. The genre often included elements of electronic dance music as well as other forms.
